The residents of El Platinillal have no access to clean drinking water. This is a rural community with a high poverty rate (82% of the population earns an average of $85 US per month.)
The need is to build a new water and sanitation system to provide access to clean water and sanitation services in a sustainable way. |

Due to excessive population growth, the gravity-flow water system built in 2007 is not able to provide clean water to about one/third of the current population, especially children and the elderly. The main objective of the project is to rehabilitate and extend the current water system in a sustainable way in order to reduce the risks in case of natural disasters, and supply water to the growing community in a sustainable way. |

Calderon is a rural community located in the central part of the Atlantic Autonomos Region South. 57% of families do subsistence farming--corn, beans, yucas & malangas 71% obtain & use untreated water from rivulets & river edges
Calderon needs 7800 gallons/day to meet WHO standards. The spring which has been encapsulated provides 13,900 gallons/day. |

La Esperanza Rancho Grande |

La Esperanza is divided into 3 sectors, each sector separated from the others. Each is like a neighborhood. They are called 1) El Triunfo. 2) El Carmen. 3) La Esperanza. The population census of 2005 categorized the entire La Esperanza community as one of severe poverty.
La Esperanza is over 150 miles from Rio Blanco. It takes 8 hours to reach by truck and approximately 10 hours by bus.
To reach the Municipality of Rancho Grande from La Esperanza takes an hour & a half by vehicle. There is no public transport. From Rancho Grande there is a truck/bus to within 2-3 miles of La Esperanza. People walk the rest of the way |

Most families engage in subsistence agriculture raising such products as corn, beans,potatoes. They sell surplus products in Matagalpa.
